The SDS Office
This Office is responsible for providing reasonable accommodations for those persons with disabilities on campus. The office staff is committed to a philosophy that allows for the full integration and participation of a student with a disability in campus life. Some of the services offered include: consultation prior to University enrollment, priority registration, note-taker services, study rooms with adaptive equipment, alternative testing arrangements, scribes, interpreters and information on community resources It is the policy of Wayne State University not to discriminate against qualified persons with disabilities in it admissions policies and procedures or its educational programs, services or activities. It is agreed upon that all students can achieve academic success through personal reasonability and support.
Working with Students with Disabilities
This office provides a Liaison Program for staff, faculty and administrators who are willing to volunteer to be a liaison between their department and the disability office. The program has been very successful in communicating information to the faculty regarding institutional responsibility, student reasonability and proper protocols in working with students with disabilities. The Liaison training program assists liaisons in having a working knowledge of how the university response to the Federal requirements under Section 504 and ADA as well as increases awareness for departments and faculty in developing written departmental accommodation systems that provide faculty with methods for delivery of accommodations including classrooms, labs and with Teaching Assistants.
The University of Washington has developed a comprehensive website around issues of disabilities. They have incorporated information from around the United States to assist faculty and students in learning about individual empowerment and barrier reduction, through the use of technology and universal design.
